DGT theory test topics › Traffic Signs and Signals
When signals in Spain contradict each other, you follow them in this order: traffic officers first, then temporary signs, then traffic lights, then vertical signs and finally road markings. Within the same type, the most restrictive signal applies.
Key rules to remember
- Order of priority: instructions from traffic officers; temporary signs that change the normal layout (for example road works); traffic lights; vertical signs; road markings.
- Same type, different message: if two signals of the same type contradict each other, follow the more restrictive one.
- Main priority signs: STOP, Give way (Ceda el paso) and Priority road (Calzada con prioridad) regulate most junctions.
- Single-level streets: since 1 October 2026 pedestrians have priority on streets where the road and the pavement are at the same height.
Exam tip: You need to recognise the signs by sight. Our guide to Spanish road signs shows 160 of them with their names in English.
Practise: DGT questions about this topic
- The driver of the red vehicle intends to go straight, but the auxiliary traffic light shows a green right-turn arrow while the main light is red. Should the driver allow the blue vehicle behind to pass if it intends to turn right?
- The reversible lane is open. Are you allowed to cross the left double broken line to overtake?
- When a vertical sign contradicts a fixed beacon, which one takes precedence?
- The yellow car in the picture is stopped because its driver wants to go straight ahead. According to the signage, what should it do?
- At the sign depicted in the image, what must you do?
